"Awelye- Atnwengerrp" is depicted by a series of lines painted in different widths, patterns and colours. Minnie also paints circles, swirls, and breast designs. These pattern represents the design painted on the top half of the women's' bodies during bush tucker ceremonies in their country of Atnwengerrp.

This series of small panel installation paintings were first created at DACOU for the Tandanya exhibition Adelaide in 2000. Two years later DACOU supplied a major solo exhibition held at Sydney’s Gallery Savah with 500 26x26cm panels for the installation. More than 400 paintings were snapped up by astute collectors over that 3 week solo show.

We have now released the remaining collection of the installation paintings to mark the celebration and opening of our new gallery in Broome.  

Minnie Pwerle (1910-2006) is one of Australia’s most important artists to emerge from the Utopia Desert Art Movement. Her paintings are in important collections around the world. Experts estimate she created more than 3000 paintings over a seven year period (from 1999 to 2006). She is noted for her graphic designs drawn from her traditional stories relating to Aboriginal women.

Her paintings have been included in many public exhibitions and she has had numerous solo exhibitions in Australia and abroad. Many of Minnie Pwerle’s solo exhibitions were organised and co ordinate by DACOU.
